Large Coins

Living in the USA for many years I fell in love with old American banknotes and coins…..I actually amassed quite a large collection and enjoyed them as a hobby, as a learning tool and as investments.

However, when dealing with coins, precious metals in particular, size is important….and bigger is often better. I got to wondering about what the largest coin in the world was ?

It’s very easy today to go online and research that. You’ll be bedazzled by glitzy photos of Australian and Canadian gold coins. Even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 can be found on Britains claimant to the title.

As ‘one offs’ these are very impressive and have significant value…..but these are all items posted online for a purpose….ecommerce.

When I was involved in my research into coinage and currency, I had to read books and wasn’t enfiladed with commercialism, so my search for the worlds largest coin/s was made a little easier.

If you travel to the islands of Micronesia in the Pacific, you will find large crystalline stones with a hole in the middle of them….the hole being for the movement of them. It is thought that these ‘Rai’ stones were used as a form of currency and trade good and their real value actually lies within the oral history that goes with each stone and is passed from owner to owner.

So if you’re travelling to Micronesia, you may want to pack some loose change with you… just in case!
