Border Castles Of Wales And England 2026

Oct 22nd - Oct 29th

Day 1 Welcome to Chester. We’ll meet in the hotel lounge at 4pm then embark on a group orientation. We’ll get acquainted over dinner together this evening.

Day 2 Lets walk the city walls. Originally a Roman town and fortress, Chester boasts of some of the best. Chester is a corruption of the word ‘castles’ or castle. We’ll also explore the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, along with other Roman remains. After lunch we’ll set off again and explore Cathedral Heights and ‘The Rows’. Free for dinner this evening

Day 3 Today we’ll take a pretty drive West to the lovely town of Llangollen. Theres lots to accomplish today, such as a visit to spectacular Val Crucis Abbey, a canal boat trip across the amazing Pontcysylte Aqueduct and a walk up to Dinan Bran Castle, before heading back to Chester.

Day 4 Join us today as we transfer our base of activities to Ludlow and its famous and powerful castle, which used to be the capital of the Welsh Marches. On the way we’ll visit historic Chirk Castle and the atmospheric Whittington Castle ( of Dick Whittington fame). Tonight we will dine together.

Day 5 After breakfast we will take a walk and have an orientation around the town and walls of Ludlow Castle. As we stroll, think on Prince Arthur and all that :-) You’ll be free for dinner tonight. Tomorrow we will zigzag between England and Wales. Free for dinner.

Day 6 A hearty breakfast and short drive later will see us in the county town of Montgomery, a town that got ‘left behind’….with its mighty fortress ruins. We’ll visit and then move onto the magnificent and beautiful Powys Gardens and Castle. Lets have a late pub lunch before examining Offas Dyke, a great earthwork that was built to protect King Offas domain… a fascinating part of our Dark Age history. In so doing we’ll talk about ‘commoners rights’ and how they still work today.

Day 7 Today we enjoy another scenic drive down to Hay On Wye… the ‘town of books’. We’ll find out more about Richard Booth ( the King of Hay) and we’ll visit his castle…one of my favourites in the world. after lunch we’ll walk along the River Wye and get ourselves lost amongst a myriad of books. This is a surprising border town ! Returning to our hotel, we’ll take a brief stop to visit a ‘ducking stool’ in Leominster.

Day 8 Another hotel transfer today, our next stop is Chepstow and its iconic castle. during the drive today we’ll take a slight detour so that cartographers amongst us can see the Mappa Mundi that is securely preserved in Hereford Cathedral. As we’re in the area, lets add White Castle to our list. A little off the beaten track, its not to be missed. If time allows we’ll enjoy another pub visit…The Hunters Moon in LLangattock.

Day 9 Henry V was born in Monmouth, just a stones throw from our hotel, in the castle. Lets take a look ! We then have a busy day…drum roll please ! Tinter Abbey, Raglan Castle and Goodrich Castle are all awaiting the pleasure of our company. Our last evening dinner will be together tonight.

Day 10 The tour ends after breakfast today, but rest assured I’ll make sure that you have transport back to the local train station or will be able to offer advice and help if you are continuing your stay. There you have it. I’ve mixed some walking with some sightseeing, the environment, archaeology, and of course, adventure into this tour. I know everyone will love it and the very small group adds to what will be a tremendous experience and something you’ll never forget.

Cost of this tour is $5650 per person.
