Norfolk And Suffolk -East Anglia
2 weeks: April 19th - May 2nd
Day 1 We’ll meet at our hotel and enjoy an orientation and a delicious meal together
Day 2 This morning we head to Southwold - A quintessentially British seaside town. With a prominent lighthouse, in view we’ll enjoy an Adnams Brewery tour and tastings. Lunch will be included.
Day 3 Discover our hometown and base of Woodbridge - one of the gems in the Suffolk crown. Lying along the river Deben it combines excellent river walks, shops and many activities. With a history of ropemaking, sail making and boat building The town has a working tide Mill - only 1 of 2 in the UK. With the North Sea as a backdrop, its a lovely day.
Day 4 Today we visit and explore the great burial ships at Sutton Hoo ( The Dig). This is a splendid opportunity to examine the Anglo Saxon occupation of Britain, and the splendour that came with them. This afternoon a visit that will bring to life WW2 can be had at the Parham Airfield museum. An American airbase for the 390th Bomb Group, 8th United States Army during the war. And Britain's secret Army - the British Resistance Organisation. where we will shed light on Britain's best kept war secret.
Day 5 Today you’ll tour the colleges and famous bridges of Cambridge. There is something for everyone in this famous city of history. Packed full of stunning architecture the tightly packed city centre is perfect for exploring ancient colleges, cobbled streets and the picturesque "Backs" along side the river Cam. Free for lunch today.
Day 6 A more relaxing day today as we venture into ‘Constable Country’. He was a great British artist and we’ll visit one or two of the landscapes that he immortalised in oils. In the medieval town of Lavenham you’ll be free for lunch and a little free time.
Day 7 This morning we change hotel locations by driving north, from Suffolk to Norfolk. Driving through Thetford - the birthplace of Thomas Paine…. lets talk about the War of Revolution in the Americas and in France! … And onto the Anglo Saxon village at West Stow. Here we’ll see how the Saxons lived. Eventually arriving at our new home amongst various English windmills and wind pumps found in the area.
Day 8 A short drive through the fens will see our arrival at Holkham. Set in an area of stunning coastal landscapes we’ll visit Englands largest national nature reserve. Home to hundreds of bird species… and both common and grey seals are a regular sight here.
Day 9 Onto a morning visit at Walsingham with its long history of religious pilgrimage and home to the ruins of 2 medieval monastic houses. On our return to our beautiful seaside hometown lets try and see the Lifeboat horse at the quay, as we explore the sights and sounds of the harbour, beach and salt marshes.
Day 10. This morning we visit more of the Norfolk Broads, a vast area of peat bogs and fenland. We’ll visit the Museum of the Broads at Stalham where we can grab a quick lunch before having a historic boat trip, on which we’ll learn about a mariners way of life.
Day 11 After breakfast we’ll visit Norwich Cathedral and enjoy a riverside and cathedral close walk. You’ll be free for lunch after which you can visit the castle, the museums, and Strangers Hall or any of the other fascinating places in Norwich. We later go on to discover the Anglo Saxon Abbey of St Benet's. You’ll also have an opportunity to climb the church tower at Ranworth to capture a beautiful view across the ‘Broads’.
Day 12 Following a coastal drive this morning we’ll step onto West Runton Beach where the largest mammoth skeleton ever discovered was excavated…. and Happisburg Beach where ancient footsteps have been found in the bedrock. We later visit Horsey Windpump - one of the largest windpumps on the Norfolk Broads - to discovery its dramatic history….why were they built and what was the way of life?
Day 13 Today we take a drive up to the magnificent Sandringham House and Estate. A palace and home to royalty, its a splendid place to explore. After lunch we will drive to the Norfolk coast to visit Admiral Lord Nelsons birthplace at Burnham Thorpe where we’ll take a little step into Britains naval past, returning for our Farewell dinner tonight.
Day 14 After breakfast your tour will be over. We will wish you a fond and heartfelt farewell as we give advice on forward travel plans.
