Northern England is a beautiful region and on this tour we will use three hotels from which to explore.
Starting in York, we will visit Fountains Abbey, York Minster Cathedral, National Railway Museum ( largest in the world), and enjoy a walking tour through this incredible medieval city.
Hexham will be our next homebase. It’s a small market town nestled close to the imperious Hadrians Wall and benefitting from its own abbey. We will walk the most beautiful sections of the wall…. Easy walking, and visit Vindolanda, a Roman fortress with a fascinating archaeological dig currently underway. It’s a marvellous insight into Britains Roman occupation.
Onwards to our final hotel in Alnwick. Sitting close to the border with Scotland, this area has scene much warfare and movement of people’s. The Vikings were first recorded as destroying the priory on Lindisfarne during a bloody assault. Castles and towers dot the landscape and served as protection from rampaging Scots and Reivers. Alnwick itself is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland…. Their castle home is more commonly known as Hogwarts. We will enjoy visits to all of these places as well as a beautiful coastal walk that will take us up to Dunstanburgh Castle.
This is a fabulous tour that takes in some of the best bits of the North of England.
